Bleeding

  • Novo 7

NovoSeven was introduced in the United States in March 1999. It is the only recombinant factor VII product available for the treatment of bleeding episodes and prevention of surgical bleeding in patients with hemophilia A or B with inhibitors to FVIII or FIX and patients with FVII deficiency. FVII is one part of a chain of proteins in the blood that work together to promote clotting.

For people with FVII deficiency or hemophilia and inhibitors to FVIII or FIX, the goal is to resolve bleeding episodes quickly. For a bleed to resolve, a stable clot must be formed at the site of the bleed so that healing can begin.

So when the deficient factor in the blood-clotting process can be bypassed or replaced, and the process can continue, the clot formation is closer to being completed.

Under the supervision of a doctor and in the comfort of home, patients can make every minute count when it comes to resolving a bleed quickly.

NovoSeven® RT is the only recombinant treatment indicated for Glanzmann's thrombasthenia (GT) with refractoriness to platelets.

  • Lysteda™

LYSTEDA™ (tranexamic acid) Tablets is indicated for the treatment of cyclic heavy menstrual bleeding.

  • Cyklokapron

CYKLOKAPRON Tablets and Injection are indicated in patients with hemophilia for short term use (two to eight days) to reduce or prevent hemorrhage and reduce the need for replacement therapy during and following tooth extraction. Tranexamic acid is a competitive inhibitor of plasminogen activation, and at much higher concentrations, a noncompetitive inhibitor of plasmin, i.e., actions similar to aminocaproic acid. Tranexamic acid is about 10 times more potent in vitro than aminocaproic acid.

  • Amicar

AMICAR (aminocaproic acid) is 6-aminohexanoic acid, which acts as an inhibitor of fibrinolysis. AMICAR is useful in enhancing hemostasis when fibrinolysis contributes to bleeding. In life-threatening situations, fresh whole blood transfusions, fibrinogen infusions, and other emergency measures may be required.

  • Thrombin-JMI®

Is indicated as an aid to hemostasis whenever oozing blood and minor bleeding from capillaries and small venules is accessible. It is a biologically active hemostatic agent that works directly at the end of the blood coagulation cascade to clot the fibrinogen of the blood directly To see how Thrombin-JMI® works for bleeding control.

Surgical

  • Avitene™ (Davol)

Avitene™ Microfibrillar Collagen Hemostat is an active absorbable collagen hemostat, proven to accelerate clot formation. Avitene™ effectively enhances platelet aggregation and the release of proteins to form fibrin, resulting in hemostasis.

Avitene™ Microfibrillar Collagen Hemostat (MCH) and Avitene™ UltraFoam™ sponge are indicated in surgical procedures as an adjunct to hemostasis when control of bleeding by ligature or conventional procedures is ineffective or impractical.

  • FEIBA

FEIBA VH is an anti-inhibitor coagulant complex with factor VIII inhibitor bypassing activity that is indicated for the control of spontaneous bleeding episodes or to cover surgical interventions in hemophilia A and hemophilia B patients with inhibitors. In addition, the use of FEIBA IMMUNO (AICC) has been described in a few non-hemophiliacs with acquired inhibitors to factors VIII, XI, and XII.

  • Fibrillar

Fibrillar is used adjunctively in surgical procedures to assist in the control of capillary, venous, and small arterial hemorrhage when ligation or other conventional methods of control are impractical or ineffective. SURGICEL, SURGICEL Fibrillar Hemostats can be cut to size for use in endoscopic procedures.

  • SyvekPatches

The SyvekPatch® is made of a naturally occurring polysaccharide polymer composed of highly purified poly-N-acetyl glucosamine free of proteins and contaminants. It is used to promote rapid wound closure and cessation of bleeding in hemodialysis patients following needle removal. The SyvekPatch® significantly reduces the duration of compression required to achieve hemostasis in hemodialysis patients, thus reducing vascular access damage. Vascular access complications remain the single greatest cause of morbidity and account for approximately one-third of all admissions and hospitalization days in the hemodialysis population.

  • TISSEEL

TISSEEL consists of a two-component fibrin biomatrix that offers highly concentrated human fibrinogen to seal tissue and stop diffuse bleeding.

Iron Supplements

Iron is one of the minerals in the human body. It is one of the components of hemoglobin, the substance in red blood cells that helps blood carry oxygen throughout the body. If you do not have enough iron, your body cannot make hemoglobin, and you may develop anemia. This is known as iron-deficiency anemia, the most common type of anemia.

  • Iron Supplement Tips

    • Iron is best absorbed on an empty stomach. Yet, iron supplements can cause stomach cramps, nausea, and diarrhea in some people. You may need to take iron with a small amount of food to avoid this problem.
    • Milk, calcium and antacids should NOT be taken at the same time as iron supplements. You should wait at least 2 hours after having these foods before taking your iron supplements.
    • Foods that you should NOT eat at the same time as you take your iron include:
    • High fiber foods, such as whole grains, raw vegetables, and bran
    • Foods or drinks with caffeine
    • Some doctors suggest taking a vitamin C supplement or drinking orange juice with your iron pill. This can help the iron absorb into your body. Drinking 8 ounces (240 milliliters) of fluid with an iron pill is also OK.

  • Proferrin ES

(Recommended, over the counter iron) Proferrin® contains Heme Iron Polypeptide, a natural form of iron with high absorption and low side effects that helps maintain and support healthy iron levels. *GT patient tip: Proferrin causes less constipation than other iron supplements

  • Iron Infusion

Iron can be given intravenously if needed. IV iron is absorbed more rapidly by the body than oral iron.
